If you have some stray screws and bolts (a.k.a. fasteners) lying around and aren’t quite sure what size they are, or if you need to replace a missing bolt on a piece of machinery and need to know what size to get, here are some methods to easily figure that out.

Bolts and screws are commonly used fasteners to keep the machine parts together. There are many different types of bolts and screws – varying types of heads, threads and more. Different versions are used depending on the application requirement. Many times people misuse the terms "bolt" and "screw".

Like lag screws, carriage bolts are available in a variety of lengths, diameters and coatings. When attaching wooden components together with carriage bolts, standard practice is to clamp the pieces together prior to drilling the hole for the bolt. The hole should be just slightly smaller than the bolt’s diameter.

Use screws if you don’t plan on using additional adhesives. If you are building a simple shelf or bookcase, you can use glue and nails, but you’ll feel much more secure about it if it fastened with screws. The threads of a screw grip and “bite” into the wood to make a joint stronger and more secure.

It might seem appropriate to use 3-inch screws, but modern drill/drivers and impact drivers bury the head of the screw up to 1/2 inch, and the tip of a 3-inch screw can penetrate out the other side. Screws that measure 2 1/2 inches are more appropriate for two-by-fours placed flat, allowing you to bury the head as needed.

Thread Measurement Thread Form Profiles. Using a thread profile gage is a quick way to check your threads for proper form and pitch. Thread form is defined as its profile in an axial plane for a length of one pitch. Simply place the correct form into the threads and by shining a light behind the profile, it’s possible to detect any signs or symptoms.

Use a screw extractor to grab it. A screw extractor could save your day. It will grab just about any threaded fastener and remove it-even if the head has snapped off. It usually comes with a hardened drill bit to drill a hole in the center of your stubborn screw or bolt. Then you turn the extractor counterclockwise into the hole.
